That Christopher Nolan is a legendary filmmaker, and that every film he makes has much to dissect and discuss—even years after its release—is a given. We are still discussing Following (1998) over 25 years after its release, which is a testament to that. As we continue to delve into his films and are captivated by his magic, one of his most beloved works has achieved a milestone. Interstellar, directed by Nolan and released in 2014, is now turning 10. Yes, you read that right. It might make us feel old, but facts are facts: it has been a decade since the film first hit the big screen and has kept us captivated ever since. But did you know that this cult classic almost had Irrfan Khan alongside its starry ensemble?
Yes, you read that right. Irrfan Khan was one of the most celebrated actors of our time, and his passing remains one of the biggest losses the cinema world has ever faced. Known for starring in some of the most nuanced and beloved films, Irrfan was also sought after by many international filmmakers, and he featured in multiple Hollywood productions. This list could have included Interstellar, but the actor had to decline due to scheduling conflicts. Here’s what you should know about it.
According to ETimes, in a retrospective interview, Irrfan Khan spoke about having to reject Interstellar. The actor revealed that the filmmakers required a four-month commitment, which conflicted with his schedule for D-Day and The Lunchbox. He also expressed how difficult it was to turn down a film by Christopher Nolan.
“They expected a huge commitment from my end. I had to stay in the US for four months at a stretch. I tried to work out my schedule and suggested that I could shuttle between India and the US, as it wouldn’t have been possible for me to be there for that long. I wanted to be here for The Lunchbox and D-Day. They couldn’t allow that,” Irrfan said.
The official synopsis for Interstellar reads: "In Earth's future, a global crop blight and a second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable. Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind's new home."
The movie is streaming on JioCinema, Netflix, and Prime Video. You can watch it on JioCinema with your OTTplay Premium subscription. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
