Sarah Pinborough adapted her 2022 novel into the British thriller TV series Insomnia. It premiered on Paramount+ on May 23, 2024, and Vicky McClure played the leading role. Now, all the episodes have begun streaming on SonyLIV (OTTplay Premium).

Plot overview

In the series, insomnia strikes a woman nearing her 40th birthday, prompting her to look into her family history. Two weeks before her 40th birthday, Emma (McClure), a wealthy lady, suffers from sleep deprivation and worries she is going crazy. As Emma's world starts to fall apart, the only way to uncover the truth about her past and stop more tragedies from happening is to investigate it.

Cast and crew

Sarah Pinborough greenlit the six-part series in March 2023, adapting her own novel of the same name. Series producer Charlotte Essex joins executive producers Andy Harries, Jessica Burdett, and Tim Bricknell. It was directed by Börkur Sigthorsson, while Left Bank Pictures produces it. Additional executive producers include Pinborough and Sigthorsson.

Build Your Own Films contributes to the production, and Vicky McClure, who plays Emma, is both a producer and an actor on the show.

Leanne Best plays Phoebe, Emma's estranged sister, and Tom Cullen plays Robert, Emma's husband. Smylie Bradwell and India Fowler play their children, Will and Chloe. Insomnia features six episodes with a runtime of 45–47 minutes each.

Vicky McClure's experience

Earlier, McClure said during a London Insomnia Q&A session that she feels like she has grown up; she is 40 now. While the actor thoroughly enjoys her work in procedural drama, she was eager to dive into something that felt fresh and new. For instance, McClure mentioned that she thoroughly enjoyed walking in high heels throughout the series.

Even though just a terrible night's sleep can throw you off kilter, the actor has never had insomnia herself, which makes her endeavour all the more daunting. In the Q&A, she said that her experience filming the show has given her a newfound empathy for people who struggle with sleep deprivation. The show uses horror and supernatural themes to show how Emma's illness affects her mental health and the mental health of people close to her.

She added that she can only imagine the devastating impact insomnia can have on an individual's life. She really empathizes with going to work every day while dealing with insomnia.
