On September 25, Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing movie of 2024 thus far, will be accessible for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar in India. Pixar Animation Studios is the producer of the 2024 animated coming-of-age movie for Walt Disney Pictures. Kelsey Mann, making his feature film debut, helmed the 2015 follow-up to Inside Out, while Mark Nielsen produced it. Mann and LeFauve devised the narrative, and Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein wrote the script. In addition to Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser, the cast also includes Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan reprising their roles from the first movie. The film chronicles Riley's emotions as new sensations infiltrate his mind.
Storyline overview: Riley's emotions and new additions
The film, which debuted on June 14, follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) as he navigates the early stages of puberty, focussing on the five well-known emotions from the original Inside Out: Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and Disgust (Liza Lapira). However, Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), and Ennui/Bordem (Adèle Exarchopoulus) seize control of the control room and drive the originals out as Riley leaves for a sleepaway hockey camp.
In order to authentically depict how teenagers' emotions develop during puberty, just like in the previous film, the production team sought advice from psychologists and enlisted the help of a group of teenagers to appropriately depict modern teenage life.
Key characters and emotions in Inside Out 2
Amy Poehler's character "Joy" frequently manages Riley's emotional life and is wary of letting in any influences that might make her unhappy. Maya Hawke portrays Anxiety, a brand-new orange emotion that paralyses every circumstance in an attempt to keep Riley from suffering negative consequences. Kensington Tallman portrays Riley Andersen, a 13-year-old girl whose thoughts are brimming with emotions. Liza Lapira portrays disgust as a green emotion that deals with both visceral aversion and gut feelings like reading body language. Tony Hale portrays Fear, the purple emotion that keeps Riley safe from harm in the real world. Lewis Black portrays the crimson emotion of anger, which governs Riley's aggressive hockey play. Phyllis Smith's blue emotion of sadness helps Riley process distressing events. Ayo Edebiri's new cyan emotion, envy, drives Riley to seek what others have. Adèle Exarchopoulos portrays Ennui, a new blue emotion with a French accent that both conveys Riley's ennui and uses sarcasm, a false sense of disinterest, or reserved reactions to avoid awkward situations. In the French versions of the film released in Europe and Canada, Exarchopoulos played the same character. Riley feels embarrassed; therefore, Paul Walter Hauser plays Embarrassment, a new pink emotion, and covers his face with a hoodie in response. June Squibb portrays Nostalgia, a new beige emotion that evokes nostalgic memories of the past, which, due to Riley's youth, are consistently quite recent. The other new emotions excluded Nostalgia because they thought she had arrived too early.
Producer Meg LeFauve collaborated with director Kelsey Mann to develop the story for Inside Out 2. With $155 million earned at home and an additional $140 million abroad, the movie had the second-highest opening weekend of 2024. With a global revenue of $1.5 billion, the animated family comedy has surpassed the $1 billion mark.
Critical acclaim and achievements in the global box office
Critics gave Inside Out 2 favourable reviews, and it went on to make $1.675 billion worldwide, shattering numerous box office records and becoming the highest-grossing animated movie ever. In addition, it became the eighth-highest grossing movie of all time and the highest-earning movie of 2024.
