Laapataa Ladies, which was India's official entry in the Best International Feature category at the 97th Academy Awards, is out of the Oscars race. The film, directed by Kiran Rao is now a part of the 15 features that are shortlisted and will be vying for a spot in the final five. The update was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on Wednesday morning, December 18.
On December 18, it was announced that Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies (retitled Lost Ladies) failed to make it to the shortlist for the Oscars 2025 in the Best International Feature category. However, another film about India, British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's Santosh, starring Indian actors Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar, representing the UK, has made it to the list.
The other contenders in the category are France's Emilia Pérez, I'm Still Here (Brazil), Universal Language (Canada), Waves (Czech Republic), The Girl with the Needle (Denmark), and The Seed of the Sacred Fig from Germany, Touch (Iceland), Kneecap (Ireland), Vermiglio (Italy), Flow (Latvia), Armand (Norway), From Ground Zero (Palestine), Dahomey (Senegal), and How to Make Millions before Grandma Dies (Thailand). The final Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17.
Meanwhile, Laapataa Ladies was chosen from India's committee from 29 films across various Indian languages including this year’s Cannes Grand Prix winner, All We Imagine as Light, directed by Payal Kapadia and including Bollywood hit Animal.
Laapataa Ladies was released in theatres in March 2024 and features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav in the lead roles alongside Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma. The film has been produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios.
