Multiple IPs will come and go, some will hit gold, and some will never see the light of the day for a sequel, but one that will always stay relevant and young no matter what is Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones. Decades ago in the 80s George Lucas and Steven Spielberg came together to make one of the most iconic franchises of not just their times but generations to come and ended up giving us the Ford starrer film series that saw the release of the fifth film this year.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny aka Indiana Jones 5 released on the big screen on June 30, 2023, and was received well by critics across the globe. While there were some things that didn’t land well, almost everyone was in awe of Harrison Ford and his art to still captivate the audience after almost spending four decades with the material.
So far the Indiana Jones franchise includes 5 movies with one TV show a part of the canon making the count 6. So as we are a day away from the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny is all set to release on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar in India, we are listing down the 6 projects in chronological order to watch them and where they are streaming.
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (TV Show – 1992 to 1996)
Creator: George Lucas
The TV show that ran for two seasons is optional if you want a deeper knowledge of the world you are about to get into. Technically the show offers a look at the young days of Indian Jones played by Sean Patrick Flanery which technically works as a foundation for the movie canon. It explains to you in detail what actually led to Harrison Ford’s adventures and his relationship with his father. It shows the young Jones working with some supremely historical figures including then-US President Theodore Roosevelt, Pablo Picasso, Leo Tolstoy, and more.
Available On: Disney+, Paramount, and Amazon Prime Video (on rent)
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984)
Director: Steven Spielberg
The movie that technically stands in the second position seen by the order of release year, is actually the beginning of the arc. Said to be the darkest film in the entire franchise, it was Temple Of Doom that gave birth to a PG-13 rating, which didn’t exist before this Spielberg directorial. The movie where Harrison Ford survives an assassination attempt in Shanghai and makes a landing in India, was a hot topic for its gory nature and disturbing visuals. A man’s heart was pulled out of his chest in one scene, so you can guess.
Available On: Disney+, Paramount, and Amazon Prime Video (on rent)
Raiders Of The Lost Arc (1981)
Director: Steven Spielberg
Technically the movie that was the first in the franchise, it actually set after the events of Temple Of Doom. The race between Indiana Jones and the Nazis was to get the Ark of the Covenant, a gold-plated chest, which Adolf Hitler thought could help him win the world. Before Jones landed in India, he was on an adventure in South America, the US, Africa, and Asia.
Available On: Disney+, Paramount, and Amazon Prime Video (on rent)
Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989)
Director: Steven Spielberg
It was a movie that was marking the end of an era in the storyline and moving to a newer arc. It was Indiana Jones using his father’s note to find an ancient artifact and also his father. The race was with Nazis against it as both were behind a Holy Grail that was a key to immortality. Add to that the father was played by Sean Connery.
Available On: Disney+, Paramount, and Amazon Prime Video (on rent)
Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (2008)
Director: Steven Spielberg
It took 20 years for the makers to come back with the new era and they chose to bring Shia LaBeouf and Cate Blanchett in pivotal parts. This time it was a telepathic crustal skull that was being chased and Indiana Jones is racing against the Soviets this time around. The movie was received well and the movie made way for the next one but the wait was longer.
Available On: Disney+, Paramount, and Amazon Prime Video (on rent)
Indiana Jones And The Dial Of The Destiny (2023)
Director: James Mangold.
This was technically the first movie in the franchise not directed by Steven Spielberg. Dial Of Destiny brought back Harrison Ford and the franchise after over a decade. It brings Helena and has our very own Indy unite with her to find the most powerful artifact. The movie now hits Disney+ on December 1, 2023.
