Bollywood has seen many films that have been made on India’s freedom which ignites the patriotic fervour within us. We, at OTTplay, give you a list of films to watch during this Independence Day.

Gandhi

How can any list be complete without the mention of the film that had been made on the illustrious life and glorious works of the father of the nation Shri Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi! The film ‘Gandhi’ saw the Hollywood actor Ben Kingsley portraying the titular role of ‘Gandhi’ the film that eventually became a benchmark of sorts for the historical films that were made thereafter. The film traced the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi with prime focus being on the role that he played in the India’s independence.

Lakshya

The film starred Hrithik Roshan in a role that can be definitely termed as one of his career-defining ones. The transformation of Hrithik Roshan’s character from being ‘no one’ to being ‘no. one’ is definitely exceptional. Till date, the film not only acts as an inspirational film for many, but also gives the goosebumps even till date. Besides Hrithik Roshan, how can anyone forget the memorable roles of the spunky Preity Zinta and the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in the film!

Legend of Bhagat Singh

For an actor like Ajay Devgn who had done mainly action films like Jigar, Phool Aur Kaante and many others, a film like ‘Legend of Bhagat Singh’ was indeed a refreshing change for all his fans. Ajay Devgn, who played the titular role of the revolutionary Bhagat Singh, was indeed apt for the said role. After seeing the actor’s stellar performance, it kind of became impossible for everyone to imagine anyone else in that role.

Rang De Basanti
This is one film that can be rightly termed as ‘THE’ film that saw the transformation of Aamir Khan. One may recall that, when the film was announced, the look and feel of the film in the trailer made everyone think that this could be another youth-based film that dealt with the issues of today. But, once the film got released, and the audiences saw the film, they simply just could not stop singing praises about the film’s premise and also Aamir Khan’s stellar performance in the film. How can anyone forget the chartbuster music of the music maestro A R Rahman, that truly formed the icing on the cake.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey

The said film, which was based on Manini Chatterjee’s best-selling book 'Do And Die', which was based on the historic Chittagong Uprising that had taken place in the year 1930. The film’s director Ashutosh Gowariker, who has always been known for his perfectionism when it came to minute detailing, did a spending job as a filmmaker. The film starred Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. Even though the film did not create a storm at the box office collections, the film will always remain one of the go-to films when anyone speaks of India and patriotism.

Sardar

Full marks to the film maker Ketan Mehta for not only having imagined the veteran actor Paresh Rawal in the role of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, but also having extracted one of the actor’s carrer-best performances of all times. Giving Paresh Rawal apt company were the group of stellar performers including Annu Kapoor, Benjamin Gilani and Tom Alter.

Border

Whenever there is any mention of Sunny Deol, two films undoubtedly spring up in our mind. While the first is that of J P Dutta’s epic film ‘Border’ and the second is Anil Sharma’s ‘Gadar’, whose sequel ‘Gadar 2’ is creating a tsunami at the box-office as of date. Speaking of J P Dutta’s film ‘Border’, Sunny Deol made his character of Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri so memorable that, till date it evokes and invokes the undying feeling of patriotism in every human mind. Besides Sunny Deol, the other actors who stood out in the film included Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Pooja Bhatt, Tabu, Puneet Issar, Sudesh Berry, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and others.
