Tom & Jerry weren’t just two characters created by animation. They were rather a part of the everyday television culture that an entire family could sit, watch and laugh together about. The never-ending shenanigans between the cat and the mouse, who went from enemies to friends and back, served laugh-a-minute hilarity, guaranteeing a break from the mundane. The 2021 movie, Tom & Jerry is an ode to just that.

The film, directed by Tim Story, is a live-action animation based on the misadventures of the eccentric-yet-lovable characters, as they find themselves at loggerheads, yet again. This time, in the choicest hotel in New York, as Tom is hired to get rid of Jerry from the building. A battle of wits ensues soon after – and with that, return the elements of nostalgia that are, somewhere, still entrenched in the franchise, years on.

If you enjoyed it, here are a few animated film recommendations that offer a similar feeling of nostalgia, joy and universality, that you may also like – all available on Amazon Prime Video.

Now who didn’t love Tintin while growing up? When the rights of the supremely popular comic book series got acquired by none other than Steven Spielberg, you knew you were in for a memorable ride. No wonder did The Adventures Of Tintin become the first non-Pixar movie to receive a Golden Globe for the Best Animated Feature Film. Featuring the much-loved reporter Tintin, his pet dog Snowy, along with Captain Haddock, the action-packed film revolves around their search for the Unicorn, a missing ship wherein lies an age-old treasure. The problem? They are not the only ones looking to unfold its mystery.

The Despicable Me merchandises are a classic. Wherever you go, it’s not difficult to spot that one person with a Minion t-shirt, or a Minion phone case. Or even a person singing Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-na-na – which is precisely why it’s important to acknowledge the film that started it all. The animated comedy not only introduced the world to the amazing – and amusing – yellow army of minions, but also brought with it the ‘supervillain’ Gru, the one who planned to steal the moon. Add to the equation Gru’s three adopted daughters, Margo, Edith and the adorable Agnes, and what you have is a hilarious – and at times, heart-warming – pick-me-up you can count on.

For the ones who loved Shrek and Fiona’s love story in the franchise’s first instalment, the sequel doesn’t disappoint at all. Rather, it’s one of those rare sequels that are as good as the original. Taking place after the events of Shrek, the film follows the aftermath of Shrek and Fiona’s visit to Far Far Away, a land ruled by the latter’s parents. Her father, Harold, takes a dislike for the anti-social yet lovable green ogre, and decides to break their marriage with the help of the Fairy Godmother. In a story where ogres are kind-spirited beings and Fairy Godmothers and Prince Charmings are anything but perfect, the two-time Academy Award-winning film celebrates love and acceptance in its truest form.

Kids love Lego, and so do many adults. It’s not surprising that the film, too, based on the popular line of construction toys, does perfect justice to this love. A story about an everyday Lego minifigure, Emmett, who has an extraordinary purpose to fulfil, the film is a smart, satirical laughathon that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults alike. The villain here is Lord Business (ahem), who is aiming to freeze the Lego world using a superweapon called Kragle – thereby curbing its potential. The only way out is ‘The Special,’ a person who can find the Piece Of Resistance that can stop the superweapon. What happens when The Special, though, is in the ordinary?

Written and directed by the original series creator Stephen Hillenburg, the film keeps the essence of the long-running Nickelodeon show. The great thing about the adventure comedy is that it works as a standalone – therefore, even if you haven’t watched SpongeBob Squarepants on your television screens, you’ll be just fine. Set in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom, the friendly neighbourhood sponge, SpongeBob returns with his pink starfish buddy Patrick, frenemy Squidward, and pet snail, Gary. After their king’s crown is mysteriously stolen by their nemesis Plankton, SpongeBob and Patrick take it upon themselves to save their city, their beloved restaurant Krusty Krab, and its owner Mr. Krabs, from an otherwise dreadful aftermath. They leave for Shell City, a live-action gift shop – smartly raising the meta quotient of the story – where the crown is hidden.
