Malayalam superstar Tovino Thomas will be kicking off 2025 for the industry, with his big-budget actioner Identity, which also has Trisha Krishnan, Mandira Bedi, and Vinay Rai as part of the cast. The makers confirmed the film's theatrical release date while releasing Identity's trailer on December 23.
The movie, which marks the reunion of Forensic directors Anas Khan and Akhil Paul with Tovino, was shot last year, across several states in the country and boasts of some stellar action sequences – including one inside an airplane.
Identity will be the first Malayalam release in 2025, with the makers locking its theatrical release on January 2. The film currently won’t have any competitors, with the last Malayalam release being Mohanlal’s Barroz, which is a Christmas 2024 release.
It remains to be seen whether Marco, Rifle Club, and Barroz will have the legs to still give Tovino’s Identity competition in the New Year. If they do, it would mark a great start for the industry, which had reportedly suffered a loss of Rs 1000 crore, despite some huge blockbusters last year – including Manjummel Boys, Premalu, and Aavesham.
“The Last 45 minutes of the film happens in a world that isn't shown yet in Malayalam cinema, so it was important to show it in that huge a canvas to make it believable,” said its co-director Akhil Paul, in a recent promotional interview.
Apart from the stellar action sequences in the film, Identity also has a talented cast of stars who are sure to appeal to audiences across industries and age groups.
In a recent interview, Tovino opened up about his role in the movie. “It's a character that has its own peculiarities. I haven't played such a role before. You shouldn't act a lot for this type of character. He is a sketch artist, who at one point collaborates with the police and sketches for them," said Tovino.
On having cast members from other industries, the Thallumaala actor said, "We needed people like them because they play characters who aren't from Kerala." While Vinay Rai essays a police officer from Bengaluru, Trisha will be seen as a Bengaluru-based Malayali in the film.
