Unni Mukundan’s Marco has been finally dethroned at the Kerala box office. The action movie, which outlasted competition from Mohanlal’s Barroz , Aashiq Abu's Rifle Club and also a slew other-language releases including Mufasa: The Lion King, Viduthalai 2 and Baby John was beaten on Thursday by Identity.
The Tovino Thomas-starrer, which also has Trisha Krishnan and Vinay Rai in the lead, collected Rs 1.8 Cr on its opening day, according to industry trackers Sacnilk. This is still about a crore short of Tovino’s previous release Ajayante Randam Moshanam (ARM). This, however, was expected, given that Thursday was a working day and ARM was an Onam release. The latter had collected Rs 2.9 Cr on its opening day.
Identity, which is directed by Anas Khan and Akhil Paul, beat Marco’s two-week run at the top at the Kerala box office. The Unni Mukundan film collected only Rs 75 lakh on Thursday, but could still give tough competition to Tovino’s film this weekend.
The big-budget thriller, which revolves around three protagonists, will need a good weekend collection, if it’s to break even from theatrical revenue. The film revolves around a cop, a witness and a sketch artiste – who are forced to work together to find an elusive killer. But in the process, they find that none of them are whom they reveal themselves to be. How will this affect the investigation and what are their secrets?
The thriller will have only a week before Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram and Arjun Ashokan’s Ennu Swantham Punyalan hit theatres. Both movies have Anaswara Rajan as the lead actress. It’s pivotal that the movie does good business by then.
