Back in 1999, Sooraj Barjatya's film Hum Saath Saath Hain went on to become a massive hit at the box office. It features Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Mohnish Bahl, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, Alok Nath, and Tabu in key roles. To date, it is one of the most loved and watched films. The story resonated well with the audience since it explored the theme of a joint family. In the film, Tabu played the role of Salman's bhabhi (brother's wife). But did you know, it was Madhuri Dixit who was all set to play the part? Yes, you read that right. Sooraj Barjatya recently revealed why the casting was changed. Read on...

Why Madhuri Dixit was replaced by Tabu in Hum Saath Saath Hain?

Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan were a hit on-screen couple as they worked together in Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun. The 1994 film also featured Renuka Shahane and Mohnish Bahl. Later, in 1999, when Madhuri agreed to be a part of Hum Saath Saath Hain, Sooraj Barjatya was not too 'comfortable' with the idea of her playing Salman's sister-in-law. While speaking to Radio Nasha recently, the ace director revealed that Madhuri called him and expressed her interest in doing the film.

Sooraj Barjatya recalled, "I told her ‘Madhuri, I am making a male dominated picture and if I cast you opposite Salman, then it is a very small role for you and if I cast you opposite Mohnish Bahl, then you will be playing bhabhi to Salman Khan. She is such a lovely lady, she said ‘it doesn’t matter, it is a joy to work together’. But then I said I will not be comfortable."

Since Madhuri and Salman played on-screen lovers in his previous film, he didn't want her to play his bhabhi. He also said that the casting for the role was quite tricky since he had to get an actor who did not have an association with Salman. Barjatya continued, "The whole debate was that Salman is a star so I had to cast someone who would be accepted as a bhabhi I so we cast Tabu, because Tabu came without any image."

Sonali Bendre was seen alongside Salman and their pair was adored by the audience.
