There’s no stopping composer Hesham Abdul Wahab’s Darshana! The track from Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Hridayam that was first released online in October 2021 has now achieved a record-breaking feat by beating Entammede Jimmikki Kammal to become the most watched Malayalam song on YouTube.
Darshana, which featured the vocals of Hesham and Darshana Rajendran, racked up 110 million views in a span of 19 months, to beat the record set by Jimmikki Kammal, which was composed by Shaan Rahman and released almost five years ago.
The latter was a rage when it was released online, with people across the country and abroad, dancing to its steps and putting up videos on YouTube – before Instagram reels were popular. Jimmikki Kammal, which was from Mohanlal’s Velipadinte Pusthakam, was rendered by Vineeth and Renjith Unni.
Vineeth, who incidentally also helmed Hridayam, in a recent interview, spoke to us about how the feats that his movie has achieved – including the Kerala State Film Awards as well as selling its rights to Karan Johar – were much more than he ever thought the movie would do when he first set out to make it, ahead of the pandemic.
The movie boasted a record 15 songs and the team had also released the audio in cassettes and CDs, apart from the digital streaming services. Vineeth said that he was hopeful that Hesham would win the Kerala State Award for his work in the movie, which has Pranav Mohanlal, Darshana Rajendran and Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead.
“This was because last year, there weren’t as many movies for which people had invested so much time and effort for the music. Also, Hridayam had a lot of songs belonging to different genres, and so we knew his name was definitely worth consideration,” he explained.
Hridayam is currently available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
