Universal Pictures' live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon features a teaser trailer that shows Hiccup and Toothless in a tense situation. The feature film, written and directed by Dean DeBlois, is a direct sequel to the 2010 animated movie of the same name from DreamWorks Animation and will premiere in theatres on June 13, 2025. Mason Thames plays Hiccup, while Nico Parker portrays Astrid in the new version. Bronwyn James, Gerard Butler, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur are the remaining cast members.

Plot overview and key characters

In the trailer, we see Hiccup is an outlier on the rough island of Berk, a place where dragons and Vikings have been mortal foes for ages. Hiccup, the misunderstood and imaginative son of Chief Stoick the Vast, breaks with centuries of convention by befriending the terrifying Night Fury dragon Toothless. Their unique partnership unveils the truth about dragons, causing a profound impact on Viking society. Accompanied by the fiery and driven Astrid and the eccentric blacksmith Gobber of the Hamlet, Hiccup faces a world divided by mistrust and anxiety. Only Hiccup's friendship with Toothless can forge a new future as they confront an ancient threat that poses a threat to both dragons and Vikings. As one, they must traverse the precarious route to harmony, transcending their respective realms in the process and reimagining the roles of hero and leader.

Live-action cast and their roles

Played by Mason Thames, the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon follows the story of Hiccup, a young Viking who befriends Toothless while on a quest to hunt dragons. He tells his father, Stoick the Vast (Butler, who voices the character again from the animated series), "Dad, I can't kill dragons" in the trailer. The stern reply from Hiccup's father is "But you will."

DeBlois, who has been a part of the franchise since its inception, wrote and directed the new film. Inspired by Cressida Cowell's book series, it's based on the animated feature he co-directed with Chris Sanders in 2010. Adam Siegel, Marc Platt, and DeBlois are all producing the upcoming film.

With over $1.6 billion in worldwide box office receipts, the How to Train Your Dragon film franchise has garnered four Academy Award nominations. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is the most recent of a trilogy that began with the 2010 animated film. There have been three TV shows and five short films as well.

Mason Thames' notable acting credits

Some of Thames' notable credits include the 2022 horror film The Black Phone from Universal and the teenage comedy Incoming from Netflix. The animated films used Jay Baruchel as Hiccup's voice.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010) is available to stream on JioCinema (OTTplay Premium); you can watch How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) on Netflix, JioCinema, and Prime Video; whereas How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) is available to rent on ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium) and Prime Video.
