As the Dance of the Dragons progresses, the second episode of the second season of House of the Dragon will address the fallout from the horrific Blood and Cheese scene. Predicted on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon examines the nascent downfall of House Targaryen within the struggle that grew to be known as the Dance of the Dragons. A Son for a Son examined the fallout from Prince Lucerys' murder at the hands of Prince Aemond and took place shortly after the first season finale of House of the Dragon.
Continuity in House of the Dragon Season 2
Season 2 of House of the Dragon will continue the story without any significant time jumps like season 1. Since the Targaryen civil war may have begun long before Rhaenyra was born, it was reasonable to have season 1 cover multiple decades and introduce new House of the Dragon characters as the plot developed. However, you now know who the Dance of the Dragons characters are, as well as what groups they belong to. The war between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aemond is certain to break out after the horrific Blood and Cheese scene and Luke's death. After the season 1 finale, the story thickens.
Aegon's declaration of war
The trailer gives us a glimpse of Aegon's furious declaration of war after his six-year-old son Jaehaerys died at the hands of Blood and Cheese. The trailer also gives us a sneak peek at Rhaenyra's reaction, showing that she shares Daemon's disapproval. With Aegon's declaration of war, the Dance of the Dragons truly gets underway.
The first episode of season 2 of House of the Dragon concluded with one of the most horrifyingly violent scenes to date: Blood and Cheese killed Jaehaerys, Aegon, and Helaena's six-year-old son. Daemon seeks out Mysaria, his ex-lover and master spy known as the White Worm, in an effort to grant Rhaenyra's demand for vengeance on Aemond. She introduces him to Blood, a former butcher turned guard, and Cheese, a ratcatcher. Despite their best efforts, the incompetent duo ends up settling for Aegon's son instead of Aemond when they sneak into the Red Keep.
In the second season teaser, we see how Rhaenyra and Aegon respond to Daemon's scheme. After his son's murder, Aegon's fury knows no bounds, and he furiously launches war. Daemon's actions could cause fewer people to support her cause, so Rhaenyra is equally opposed to them. Rhaenyra and the Blacks, who stood on moral high ground against the Greens after Lucerys's death, would determine the outcome of the Dance of the Dragons with their next move, which could involve either restraint or vengeance. Daemon's reaction was to demand "a son for a son," which further exacerbates tensions and hatred.
Military strategy and Harrenhal's importance
According to the season 2 teaser, the Dance of the Dragons is a military strategy. One of the most significant military strategists for the Greens, Criston Cole, claims that controlling Harrenhal is crucial to the impending conflict, and Aemond agrees that soldiers are equally vital as dragons. With Jaehaerys' death, Season 2 of House of the Dragon officially kicks off the Dance of the Dragons.
The second season of House of the Dragon will have fewer episodes than the first, which may be disappointing, but the decision was made based on story pacing and the order in which Fire & Blood's Dance of the Dragons segment will be covered. The renewal of Season 3 of House of the Dragon is a welcome development. No matter how much has transpired on the show, House of the Dragon has only touched on the civil conflict that led to House Targaryen's downfall.
