The anticipation of war is what we have lived with for almost the past month. Westeros was preparing for a war where dragons would battle, and Kings and Queens were busy contemplating the possible outcomes. While Rhaenyra did the riskiest thing by meeting Alicent in search of peace, Aegon’s recklessness signaled a wild turn that was about to happen. One thing was sure: Rhaenyra had found her reason to fight the war. As the episode opens, she says, “Either I take the throne or die.” And that, my friends, is the beginning of the war. House Of The Dragon Season 2 has witnessed the wildest and best episode of the season. Just when you thought nothing could top Vhagar killing Lucerys and Arrax, this episode proves that she was just warming up—evil at the core, deadly at max.
House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 was all about the impending war and its beginning. Dragonstone had not reacted to anything that King’s Landing had been doing to gather an army. Daemon was in Harrenhal plotting a plan even he was unsure about, but Criston Cole was making decisions with Aemond. Episode 4 had many moments that put people in their places. Someone's pregnant, two dragons are dead, and now the King probably fights for his life. You are not prepared for this episode even remotely.
If you haven't seen the episode yet, you have already read a major spoiler. Save yourself from the rest and head back right now. With Alan Taylor, a Game Of Thrones veteran, directing, Episode 4 brought back the feeling of war that we have all grown up watching in the cult classic show. But now everyone has a dragon, and they top each other in more ways than one. The Targaryen Civil War has begun, and now houses are told to take sides. Below are the highlights of everything that happened in House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 4.
Well, well, well, Alicent Hightower is indeed a character that has grown into a beast from a naive girl who was unaware of what she was getting into in the first place. Otto Hightower, her father, and the former Hand to the King trained her well to be a woman who knows only to rule and not take orders. Her entry into this episode is with Grand Maester Orwyle, who brings an abortifacient for the Queen Mother, and they both act like it is for someone else while they know it is for Alicent. She drinks it in a jiffy as she caresses her tummy. This is a significant development because it is indeed Ser Criston Cole’s child, and this indeed becomes a serious issue because Maester knows.
This is the moment that will be written in the history of House Of The Dragon in golden words. The Queen That Never Was, Princess Rhaenys, takes charge to defeat Ser Criston Cole with her dragon Meleys and flies into the war. After defeating Sunfyre and Aegon, she has all the chances to flee from the wrath of Vhagar, but neither has Rhaenys ever backed out nor has Meleys left a war halfway. She commands Meleys to attack again and even manages to give a tough competition to Vhagar. But just when she flies over the castle, Vhagar waits in cover to kill Meleys and bites her. The dragon looks at her master as life slowly drains out of her eyes. Rhaenys sticks to Meleys, and they both fall to death, a glorious one.
King Aegon has been a reckless man on the throne with no control over himself. It took Alicent to drop to his level of insanity to explain to him what his duty is. But does our boy obey orders or advice? Well, not really. He drinks to his maximum and drives his dragon Sunfyre into the battle unannounced, only to find Rhaenys waiting there with Meleys as she attacks him and takes down Sunfyre partially. But wait, Vhagar is here too and is about to spit fire on Sunfyre, Meleys, and Rhaenys. But Aegon is in between, and Sunfyre takes the bolt with Aegon on his back. They both fall, and there is the King lying almost lifeless.
We knew Aemond would want to show Aegon his place after what he did in the last episode, and he did as he told him in the council that he has been plotting a plan with Criston. But little did we know that he would go to an extent where he would end up grilling him in dragon fire even when he could see he was in the way. But that is not even the beginning of the wilderness because, in the last few moments, when we see Sunfyre counter his last breath with an almost lifeless Aegon in the center of his wings, we look at an Aemond who has drawn his sword to probably end his brother. Ser Criston Cole barges in and tells him to stop, and Aemond walks away. The wild was about to become the wildest.
Young Rhaenyra appears in Daemon’s dreams yet again. This time, with many crowns on her head, she says, “You created me, Daemon. Yet now you are set on destroying me. All because your brother loved me more than he did you.” He swiftly draws his sword and separates her head from her body. But even the slayed head talks to Daemon. Harrenhal does that to people. The man is now even hallucinating in broad daylight when he sees his dead wife in a meeting. There has to be some significance to all of this or a vicious plan that has been plotted against Daemon. Aly Rivers is also involved, and now we even know that she is a Maester at Harrenhal.
