Spanning eight seasons over eight years, it became a landmark in TV history, redefining scale with its massive budget and vision. Winning countless awards, Game of Thrones also claimed the title of the most pirated show until 2019. Now, its prequel, House of the Dragon, has carried on this legacy, becoming the most pirated show of 2024.
House of the Dragon Is 2024’s Most Pirated Show
House of the Dragon season 2, which premiered in June 2024, continued the saga of the Targaryen civil war leading to the Dance of the Dragons. Picking up after Rhaenyra Targaryen's devastating loss of her son to Aemond’s dragon Vhagar, the season, rife with tension and expectations, concluded with 8.5 million viewers across HBO and Max.
According to TorrentFreak’s BitTorrent download traffic data, the show topped the list of most pirated shows in 2024. It was followed by The Boys (No. 2), Shōgun (No. 3), Arcane (No. 4), and The Penguin (No. 5). HBO’s dominance in this arena is notable; The Last of Us was 2023’s most pirated show, and Game of Thrones held the crown for nearly a decade. In 2024, HBO had three entries in the top 10, with Dune: Prophecy ranking ninth.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Update
Season 3 of House of the Dragon promises heightened drama, with more dragons and epic battles. Fans have eagerly awaited updates, and showrunner Ryan Condal recently revealed the production timeline on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of podcast.
Condal confirmed filming begins in January 2025, though he withheld the exact start date. “2025 is gonna be utter madness from January, like third until deep in the fall when we wrap production. We do [have a start date], but I don’t want to say it because it’ll become a thing,” he shared.
