Hit Man is an upcoming screwball comedy thriller that has a noir touch to it. Directed by the Before trilogy fame Richard Linklater, the film is sure to be a hit with the audience. Though the film will have a limited theatrical release prior to its OTT premiere, it has already been released and received positive reviews from critics at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2023, and at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.
Starring Glen Powell, of Top Gun: Maverick fame, the film also marks his screenwriting debut, a credit he shares with the seasoned director of the film. Hit Man will be released on Netflix on June 7, at the peak of the summer season. Tudum bought the distribution rights to the film for a whopping $20 million. This made the film TIFF 2023’s biggest purchase as well.
The film's teaser dropped on January 22, 2024, and is set to the iconic beats of Apples, Peaches, and Pumpkin Pie by Jay & The Techniques. The teaser offers a brief glimpse of the plot revealed by Netflix prior to its OTT debut. It reveals a sweet but full-of-chemistry first encounter between Glen Powell’s Gary Johnson and Adria Arjona’s Madison, in which they eat and talk about pie, as well as subtly appreciate one another’s company before talking shop.
The film follows the tale of ordinary philosophy professor Gary Johnson, who lives a rather boring life with his cats, Id and Ego. Embodying the missing Super Ego of the missing trilogy of the names of his cats, in terms of psychology, the film explores what happens when a strait-laced individual begins helping the police by pretending to be a fake contract killer in small, undercover gigs and crosses over from virtue to grey morality.
Gary Johnson may suck at being fun, but he has an uncanny understanding of the human condition (thanks to his passionate and pedagogical bond with Immanuel Kant). But when his role-playing habits encounter the innocent-looking stunner Madison, they find it hard to keep up the pretence in face of his blossoming affections for her, which the teaser’s chemistry assures as mutual.
The film is about mistaken identity, a sub-textual battle of the sexes, as well as an impossible rom-com set against the subtle backdrop of deeper themes. Hit Man also explores issues about identity, the ambiguity of morality, deceit in a romance, and love.
