Hellboy: The Crooked Man is all set for an OTT release in India. The 2024 superhero horror film will begin streaming on January 17, 2025, on Lionsgate Play (OTTplay Premium). Mike Mignola's Dark Horse Comics character Hellboy serves as the inspiration for Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Produced by Millennium Media, Dark Horse Entertainment, Nu Boyana Film Studios, and Campbell Grobman Films, the fourth live-action installment in the Hellboy film franchise marks the second reboot of the original film series. Brian Taylor adapted Mignola's The Crooked Man limited series and directed the film based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Christopher Golden. Cast members include Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, and Jack Kesy, who plays Hellboy.
Defying the powers of evil, this film tells a terrifying story. In this 1950s-set story, rookie BPRD agent Bobbie Jo Song is thrust into a perilous scenario when she is assigned the dangerous mission of transporting a spider to the BPRD. In order to face the wicked Crooked Man, who has come to Earth to collect souls for Satan, she needs Hellboy's assistance.
Hellboy, played by Jack Kesy, is a heroic demon who was reared by humans and is powerful, kind, and employed by the government agency B.P.R.D. He frequently receives missions and assignments involving paranormal creatures and phenomena.
Playing the role of the otherworldly figure who lingers in the Appalachian Mountains, Martin Bassindale portrays Jeremiah Witkins/The Crooked Man. Jefferson White portrays Tom Ferrell, a former soldier who had a childhood encounter with The Crooked Man. Played by Adeline Rudolph, Bobbie Jo Song is Hellboy's sidekick and a rookie agent for the B.P.R.D. The comics do not feature Song, an original character.
The critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful Hellboy: The Crooked Man has made $2 million worldwide.
Despite the unsuccessful attempt to restore the show's former glory with the David Harbour reboot, Taylor was eager to take a different approach with his remake. The filmmaker expressed his joy for the franchise and his ambition to follow the darker Crooked Man run of the comics, stating that he loves the character of Hellboy and that his favorite era of the character is this one. Guillermo Del Toro was present in every aspect of the GDT films, which were massive space operas. Conversely, Mike's (Mignola) comics from that era possessed an entirely distinct atmosphere. There was a leaner, meaner twist to the folk horror. When Hellboy was younger, he would explore the shadows as a paranormal investigator and night stalker. Mike's The Crooked Man, a story set in the late 1950s and illustrated by fellow artist Richard Corben, is particularly memorable. This is the version of the character that Taylor prefers. He simply believes that they haven't seen that version of Hellboy, so the appeal of this version to him is a return to that version and a true reset.
