The superhero movie making waves outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DCU at the moment is Hellboy: The Crooked Man. The Right Hand of Doom is set to return to the big screen after a brief hiatus, with a fresh face, Jack Kesy, taking over the titular role. Despite some mixed reactions, the film has been generating buzz. The creator of the Hellboy comics, Mike Mignola, has recently shared his thoughts on the previous Hellboy movies, shedding light on his involvement with the upcoming film.

Mike Mignola on Previous Hellboy Films

Mike Mignola, who created Hellboy 30 years ago, marking the foundation for the live-action franchise, has expressed mixed feelings about the earlier films. While celebrating 30 years of Hellboy and anticipating the release of Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Mignola has praised the new film, calling it the best Hellboy story yet. However, he also revealed his past reservations about the previous adaptations, noting that his experience with the Jack Kesy starrer was different.

As reported by Comicbook, Mignola said, "So often I would come in late on projects where somebody else had already put the pieces together in a way that didn't quite fit. And this time, I got a chance to say, 'We're going to do The Crooked Man, we're going to stick to that story.' We need to add a little bit of backstory. So we borrowed it from one other story so we didn't have to make up new stuff." This statement suggests that Mignola had a much stronger creative influence on this film compared to the previous ones.

Mike Mignola on The Crooked Man

Mignola has consistently stated that Hellboy: The Crooked Man includes some of his favorite moments he's ever created with the character. He's eager for audiences to experience these scenes, particularly since many people may not have read the comics. However, he acknowledged that the film is not a 1:1 adaptation, as the makers had to connect it to other films in the franchise.

"There is a particular moment in the church that I loved so much. I thought, 'Are they going to add special effects to that?' It's just a quiet little moment. It could easily get cut, but it stayed all the way through," Mignola remarked. He added, "Not that I didn't like the other movies or love bits and pieces from the other movies, but it was just... I was so grateful to see somebody that really did want to put [them in there], because at some point everybody says, 'Oh yeah, we're going to put your comic on screen,' but this is the time that it happened.”
