Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar boasts an ensemble star cast. Right from Manisha Koirala and Sonakshi Sinha to Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal, the star cast of SLB's debut OTT series is huge. Sharmin, who made her debut with Malaal in 2019, is the niece of the maverick. However, the actress has been on the receiving end of criticism because of her performance in the show. She plays Alamzeb in Heeramandi. While SLB hasn't reacted to the criticism his niece got, the filmmaker did speak about working with her on the show.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sanjay Leela Bhansali recalled what his niece Sharmin Segal repeatedly said on the Heeramandi set. "She kept saying, ‘Mama, I’ll underplay.' I said, ‘Underplay? Are you thinking I’m going to ask you to overplay?'," he revealed.
That said, the filmmaker found Sharmin's new energy fascinating. Bhansali stated that he is aware of the fact that the new generation of actors loves him. He further said he can see the same in the way they continuously ask him if he is happy with their take or if they should try for another take. "I can see that love in their eyes. Now that’s very rare," he revealed.
Ever since Heeramandi dropped on Netflix, Sharmin Segal has been criticised and trolled for her performance. Netizens pointed out how the actress had a similar expression in most of the scenes in the web show. Following the backlash she received on social media, the actress disabled her Instagram comment section.
Created by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Heeramandi also featured Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, Fardeen Khan and Adhyayan Suman in the lead roles. It premiered on Netflix on May 1 and got a mixed reception upon its OTT release.
