After finishing Gangubai Kathiawadi, which starred Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, and Seema Pahwa, Sanjay Leela Bhansali immediately began work on Heeramandi, a very ambitious project that is said to star Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Fardeen Khan, and Farida Jalal. SLB and Netflix made the initiative official in August of last year. While announcing the same, the official social media page of Netflix wrote, “We are excited to announce that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi IS COMING TO NETFLIX. Words aren't enough to explain how excited we are that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is partnering with us for this epic Netflix Original series but these emojis come pretty close.”
Now, there's an exciting update from this much-anticipated series. If reports are to be believed, Jackie Shroff has reportedly joined the Heeramandi cast according to Pinkvilla. After twenty years, Jackie Shroff and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are all set to reunite for this project.
They previously worked together on the 2002 historical romance film Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Madhuri Dixit Nene. In the film, Shroff played Chunni Babu, SRK's friend. The filming for a significant section of Heeramandi has already begun. The set is currently being updated with some newer components for the show's next scenes.
Sonakshi previously declined to respond when questioned about "Heeramandi" in an interview with the same publication. People can speculate all they want, she said, but nothing can be spoken or verified until an official announcement is made by SLB's team.
In Heeramandi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, will explore stories of courtesans in the kothas (bordellos) of Lahore's Heera Mandi over the course of three generations.
