The Marvel Cinematic Universe definitely gets the credit for getting Hawkeye from a relatively unknown hero to one with a global fan following. Recently Rhys Thomas, who helmed the limited series Hawkeye, revealed that the series almost had a different character essaying the role of its main villain.
The main antagonist of the series is revealed to be, spoiler alert, the Kingpin Wilson Fisk, a character who had also made an appearance on the Daredevil series. In conversation with Variety, Thomas revealed that he had considered several other characters who could serve as the pivotal antagonist for Clint Barton and Kate Bishop. The filmmaker said that when he had started his initial work on the show, he had wanted to make another character the main villain, although the Kingpin was still in consideration. A Marvel executive however, had given him a push to decide on the storyline that the show ultimately chose.
Thomas also expressed his surprise at seeing a Daredevil crossover in another recent Marvel production, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. He said that he did not expect the surprise appearance in the least, and credited Marvel for its commitment to keeping the secrecy when it came to its projects.
Hawkeye is set a year after the events of Avengers: Endgame and follows the titular superhero having to deal with the consequences of his vigilantism as Ronin. He is joined by a young woman who becomes his protegee.
The series stars Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld in lead roles along with Tony Dalton, Fra Fee, Linda Cardellini, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga, Alaqua Cox, Zahn McClarnon, Florence Pugh, and Vincent D'Onofrio.
Hawkeye is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
