With everything major about the Harry Potter TV series dropping online, we are all pumped about the speed at which the show is progressing. It was a few days back when Francesca Gardiner took center stage at the Max presentation and revealed a lot about the show. Ever since then, many actors have been named in connection to playing several Hogwarts characters. While there have been reports about Hagrid and Snape, now we hear rumors about Professor McGonagall and that the showrunners have finally found an actor to take late Maggie Smith’s legacy ahead in a Bojack Horseman actor.
As per the latest reports in Screenrant, Harry Potter TV series makers have found their Professor McGonagall in Sharon Horgan, known for her stellar work in Bojack Horseman. The actor will be taking Maggie Smith’s legacy forward. However, no one can truly replace Maggie as the iconic Professor McGonagall.
Many on the internet are questioning the casting after Francesca Gardiner’s canonical comment. However, Sharon is 54 years old, which makes sense as Maggie Smith was a decade older when she played McGonagall in Sorcerer’s Stone. This means Sharon can play a younger version, especially given the extended lifespans in the magical world.
Mark Mylod has confirmed the casting will align with the characters’ ages in the books. However, reports from Comic Book Movie suggest that Brett Goldstein, known for Ted Lasso and Thor: Love and Thunder, is in contention to play Hagrid. Yes, you read that right. Brett might be confirmed to play the part.
Speaking on the casting, Mark Mylod said, "Nobody can replace Alan Rickman, but we can find the next Alan Rickman." Alan Rickman passed away in 2016. Buzz suggests Paapa Essiedu is in the running to play a young Snape in the series. Gardiner also teased fans to expect areas of Hogwarts that haven’t been explored yet.
The Harry Potter TV series is being executive-produced by J.K. Rowling through Brontë Film, alongside HBO and Warner Bros. Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner and executive producer, with Mark Mylod as director and executive producer.
The official synopsis reads: “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, bringing fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”
Each season will bring Harry Potter’s adventures to new audiences, while the classic films will remain accessible globally. The series is planned for seven seasons, with two shot on close schedules to avoid aging issues faced in productions like Avatar 2 and 3.
