“That’s my friend….Adithi….,” says Sidhaartha Maadhyamika’s character, when asked about the girl curled up in a suitcase. But why is she in the suitcase? “She’s dead”, he quips. That’s about the gist of the teaser of director Rakesh Kadri’s upcoming comedy, Happy Birthday To Me, which releases on June 28.

Chaithra J Achar is the dead body in question, a girl that Sidhaartha had called to ‘celebrate’ his birthday with. How does she end up dead? And what Sidhaartha and his friend, played by Siddu Moolimani, do to try and get rid of her body forms the crux of the movie. But that, of course, is not going to be easy in an apartment with nosy neighbours and other visitors.

Rakesh’s film also stars Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Natya Ranga, Archana Kottige, Rachana Rai, and is based on a story that the filmmaker wrote inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope. Rakesh admits that the plot may not be novel, but says that his execution is what makes the film different and interesting. The story, he says, takes place in one day and location, following if and how the boys are able to get rid of the dead body. “The idea was to tell a story about a dead body in one place and set it as a tale of a birthday boy calling a girl home, only to find her dead in mysterious circumstances,” he had told OTTplay.

Chaithra is also quite thrilled about the release of the film that she shot for a while ago, considering that audiences are more likely to remember her for her sari-clad roles in Toby and Sapta Sagaradaache Ello. She plays a “stoner”. Speaking to OTTplay, she had said, “I play a stoner chick, who smokes weed and sports a different look with bangs, etc, a role that is quite glam. In real life, I don’t smoke, so, playing this character was different; it was a funny commercial script with good content.”
