Ever since it started streaming on Netflix, celebrated filmmaker Hansal Mehta’s new crime drama television series Scoop has become the talk of the town. With Karishma Tanna playing the protagonist (Jagruti Pathak), the story chronicles what happens when a reporter becomes the person reported about. Speaking about the show, the director recently said that it’s ‘an exploration into our current times’.
Said to be based on journalist Jigna Vora’s incarceration and acquittal, Karishma plays a senior crime reporter and Deputy Bureau Chief of Eastern Age in Scoop. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Harman Baweja, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Deven Bhojani are seen as the other lead characters in the series.
Giving an insight into the story, Hansal told IMDb, “Scoop deals with a pet world of mine which is a Gujarati joint family. The aspirations that come from within that small unit. It’s an exploration into our current times through the story of Jagruti Pathak.”
Adding to that, the filmmaker said, “It’s the story of Jagruti, an ambitious journalist, who wants a story at any cost. It’s an exploration of ambition, of aspiration. I think what we’ve done through this entire journey is to show that Jagruti, being a reporter, becomes the one reported about. Good stories allow room for introspection, and I think that’s what we’ve tried to do. I respond instinctively to things, and give a lot of freedom to my team members to let their imagination run wild.”

Speaking about his method of choosing stories, the director said: “I like to choose a story relevant to our times. As social media is becoming so rampant, and has become a tool into passing judgement, almost foreshadowing the times that we’re living in. You’re not interested in the acquittal. You’re interested in the crime and in finding an unlikely criminal.”
