When Gurudev Hoysala arrived in cinema halls, many reckoned that the film could break the box office lull that Kannada Film Industry was witnessing at the time. The year 2023 hadn't begun on a great note for the industry, considering that two of the biggest hopes Kranti and Kabzaa had failed to live up to the hype they had generated. So, with the discerning combination of KRG Studios, Daali Dhananjaya and director Vijay N. behind the project, Gurudev Hoysala carried a lot of promise of rekindling the waning among the Kannada moviegoers.

And just as hoped, the film opened in theatres with great responses from all around. Fans were mighty pleased with Dhananjaya's performance and the rest were quite impressed with the taut narrative that encompassed several critical factors including social hierarchy and the power of justice. But, despite all the positive reviews, one found that the film was not able to deliver the expected box office results. The simultaneous release of the Telugu film Dasara was cited as one reason for Gurudev Hoysala's underwhelming run with others regarding the commencement of IPL 2023 as the other governing factor.

So, when the film suddenly dropped on Amazon Prime Video on April 28, it managed to attract several first-time viewers. Some of them expressed disappointment over not being able to catch it on the big screen while a few others wondered why the film did not get its due when it mattered the most. Fans from across the border, too, commented, urging the makers to release the Telugu dubbed version of the film at the earliest.

Among the many highlights of the film, netizens have particularly pointed out the 'no nonsense' approach of the makers. Dhananjaya's performance, along with that of Naveen Shankar, too, has been singled out with a few comments wishing that the film had done away with the slightly cliched ending for a more compelling one.
