When popular comedy actor Sharan decided to make the transition to playing lead hero, he had to do with a film that he produced, namely Rambo, a decade ago. In the years since, Sharan has 14 other films as protagonist, each one with comedy as its mainstay. His 15th film is yet another home production, and his next that is up for release. Called Guru Shishyaru, this is Sharan’s first film with director Jadesha K Hampi, who made Gentleman earlier.
A period film set in the 90s, Guru Shishyaru has Sharan playing a physical education instructor at a government school, where he has to coach the local kho-kho team. One of the first posters of the film had Sharan involved in a tug-of-war with a bunch of children, which forms the backdrop of the story. Today, the team released a new song, albeit a lyrical video only, called Gurugalu Nama Gurugalu, a soulful stirring tribute to teachers, written by Dr V Nagendra Prasad, sung by Vijaya Prakash and set to tune by B Ajaneesh Loknath. The song, it would appear, is a Teachers’ Day special.
Guru Shishyaru has been announced as a September theatrical release, but the date is yet to be announced. The rumour in industry circles is that it is most likely going to be a September 16 release, given that the late Puneeth Rajkumar’s last commercial film outing, Luckyman is coming a week earlier. Sharan and team will confirm the same once the film is censored.
Meanwhile, Sharan, who was last seen in Suni’s Avatara Purusha part 1, is yet to finish work on the second instalment. At the time of Avatara Purusha’s release, Sharan and Suni had said that they were targeting a Dasara 2022 release for the second part. But with about 15% of the film yet to be shot and lot of VFX work also pending, that won’t happen. Suni, we hear, was waiting for Sharan to remove the moustache he had grown out for Guru Shishyaru to get the continuity look he needs for Avatara Purusha – Trishanku. The filmmaker has also been busy with another film, Gathavaibhava, so Avatara Purusha may come out only early next year.
