Although Rajiv Rai had started his Bollywood career in the 80s, the filmmaker seemed to have encountered more than a few roadblocks along the way. After having to leave the country when faced with extortion threats, the filmmaker returned to the director’s chair after a small hiatus, only to hang up the director’s hat yet again. Now it seems, after almost two decades, Rai is making a comeback with a new film, which promises to be one of his biggest projects yet.
According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Rai’s upcoming film is touted to be a suspense thriller. The film will reportedly feature almost 40 newcomer artists. The yet to be titled film is expected to go on floors on July 29 in Jaipur and will be shot ‘at a stretch’. Notably, the upcoming film will reportedly be ‘song less’, which might come as a shock for the filmmaker’s fans as his filmography has yielded some memorable soundtracks.
Speaking about the developments, Rai had spoken about how ‘turbulent’ the last 18 years had been for him and how he was ‘finally’ ready to come back to directing. The filmmaker was tight lipped about his new project and said he did not want to reveal much about it. “I just want to quietly make my film and let it do all the talking”, he said.
In 1997, Rai had received repeated extortion threats from the Mumbai underworld, forcing him to leave the country with his family. After a four year gap, the director had returned to filmmaking with Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat(2001), which marked Arjun Rampal’s acting debut. His last film had been 2004’s Asambhav.
Other popular films of the director include Bobby Deol’s Gupt: The Hidden Truth(1997), Suniel Shetty- Akshay Kumar starrer Mohra(1994) and Jackie Shroff’s Tridev(1989).
