Gunaa, the Kamal Haasan starrer that inspired Malayalam cinema’s all-time blockbuster Manjummel Boys, is reportedly gearing up for a re-release in digital 4K format.

Gunaa, the iconic psychological thriller that stars Kamal Haasan in the titular role, originally hit the theatres in 1991. The Santhana Bharathi directorial garnered the attention of cine-goers yet again after the movie and the iconic song ‘Kanmani Anbodu Kaadhalan’ played a major role in the recent Malayalam blockbuster, Manjummel Boys. The Chidambaram directorial, which emerged as Malayalam cinema’s all-time highest-grossing film, had many Gunaa references in many of its important scenes. Now, following the massive success of Manjummel Boys, Gunaa is reportedly gearing up for a grand re-release.
As per the recent reports, the makers of Gunaa have been remastering the Kamal Haasan-starrer into a digital 4K format, for the past few weeks. According to the grapevine, the team recently wrapped up the remastering works, and the Santhana Bharathi directorial is now all set to hit the theatres yet again. If the recent updates are to be believed, the psychological romantic drama might hit the theatres again on Friday, June 21, 2024. However, the makers have not officially confirmed these reports, yet.
The Gunaa references in Manjummel Boys and the brilliant placement of the much-loved ‘Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan’ song, which is composed by maestro Ilaiyaraaja, was absolutely loved by audiences across the globe. This creative choice by director Chidambaram and his team resulted in the survival thriller emerging as a blockbuster at the Tamil Nadu box office. The movie also emerged as the all-time highest-grossing Malayalam film in the state and collected over Rs. 60 crore. The Manjummel Boys team later had a lovely interaction with Gunaa leading man Kamal Haasan and director Santhana Bharathi, who absolutely loved the film.
