Gulshan Devaiah is all set to be seen in a double role in the upcoming Disney+ Hotstar series Bad Cop. The actor will be working with Anurag Kashyap as a co-actor for the first time, as the filmmaker will be seen as the main antagonist in the series. In an exclusive interview with OTTplay, Devaiah shared his heartfelt reflections on his evolving relationship with Kashyap. The duo has a unique history that dates back to 2008, yet it was during the filming of this series that they truly bonded.
"My first opportunity was given by Anurag with That Girl in Yellow Boots," Devaiah reminisced, while stating, "I have known him since 2008, and he used to be married to my friend. Now, me and he are both friends with Kalki (Koechlin). I had never really spent time talking to him. We never hung out, even though he was married to my friend and all that."
Devaiah described how the dynamics on set allowed him to connect with Kashyap in a way he hadn't before. The filmmaker found himself with time to relax and engage in meaningful conversations during breaks in filming. "He is such a man, consumed by what he is doing," Devaiah noted, adding, "For the first time ever in all these years that I have known him, I actually hung out with him. We sat, we chatted, because he is not a director, so he has nothing to do now in between takes; set pe baithe rehte hai, idhar udhar ki baatein kar rahe the. (We would sit on the set, chatting about various things.) So I really enjoyed that."
The actor highlighted how these interactions were far from mere small talk. "Not everything was small talk, but then I had never had these deep moments with him, so I got to do that for like, five, six days," he said, expressing his appreciation for the opportunity to see a different side of Kashyap.
Reflecting on their professional relationship, Devaiah shared, "It's a nice moment for me because of him giving me the first opportunity, and then us sort of being co-actors and colleagues now. Because he was always my senior, and I looked at him with respect and a sense of gratitude. But here, I think, he made me feel like we are equals and all of those things like that. At that point in time, I accepted it. But, of course, he will always be my senior."
Ending on a lighter note, Devaiah added with a smile, "Oh, he's also very cute."
Disney+ Hotstar will launch Bad Cop for streaming on June 21, 2024.
