Govinda always makes headlines for his unfiltered thoughts and ideas about life and career. What he also makes news for are the roles that he passed on during his peak days. One of them is said to be James Cameron’s worldwide highest-grosser, Avatar. The actor has yet again given a lengthy interview and opened up about a lot of things. While speaking about Avatar, he also revealed that he was initially offered the part of Abhimanyu in Mahabharat, which was being made by B.R. Chopra back in the day and is now one of the most iconic shows. The actor even revealed that he was thrown out when he refused to play the part, and below is everything you should know about the same.
Govinda appeared on Mukesh Khanna’s YouTube channel, Bheeshma International, where he spoke about being offered the role of Abhimanyu in Mahabharat by B.R. Chopra. He told Khanna how he used to frequently visit Chopra’s home and help his wife, Renu, with household chores. She used to call him over when she was unwell, and he would help her clean the house—without B.R. Chopra’s knowledge.
So, when Chopra called Govinda to his office and told him that he was selected to play Abhimanyu without even auditioning, the actor’s rejection did not sit well with the maverick filmmaker.
He said, “I reached his office, and he told me that he had selected me to play Abhimanyu in Mahabharat. I told him, ‘My mom has said no to this role. I won’t do it.’ He asked me, ‘Who is your mom?’ I told him she is a Sadhvi and that the film industry is secondary for me—I only do what she tells me to do. I didn’t think of Chopra Sahab as this big, influential figure at that time. My mind was different.”
He further revealed that B.R. Chopra was short-tempered, so when he heard Govinda’s rejection and the reason behind it, he lost his temper. In his rage, he said, “Woh thodi pagal hai (She is mad).” Govinda added, “I told him that my mom’s first film was Sharda, she had done nine films, and that she is his senior. I told him that whatever my mom says becomes true, so I don’t have the status to go against her words.”
Govinda then shared that one of his actions after this made B.R. Chopra call security and have him thrown out of his office. “My mom had told me to act in front of B.R. Chopra and to tell him, ‘Aapki soch mein kha gaya (I have eaten your thoughts),’ and I did exactly that. B.R. Chopra said, ‘Ye kya pagal hai, bahar nikalo isko (Who is this mad person? Throw him out).’ I told him to think about it, as he was forcing Govinda out of his office,” he said.
