This year at the Golden Globes, the award-bestowing opened with presenters Angela Bassett and Jared Leto, both formidable in their own acting zones, giving the award of Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, to Da’vine Joy Randolph for her portrayal of Mary in The Holdovers.

The actress was overjoyed by the victory, as this is her first nomination as well as win at the Golden Globes. Da’vine Joy Randolph won among top-notch actresses, who gave her a tough competition. The other nominees in the category were Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Jodie Foster (Nyad), Julianne Moore (May December), and Rosamund Pike (Saltburn).

Dressed in a burgundy, bejeweled gown that has a plunging, sweetheart neckline, an overjoyed Da’vine made her way to the stage and thanked her ‘Focus Family’ comprising of the production as well as The Holdovers’ crew. She also shared her gratitude towards Alexander Payne, for creating such a phenomenal character.

While talking about her character in The Holdovers, the Only Murders in the Building star shared how Mary was a ‘beautiful, flawed woman’ who made her feel ‘seen’. Mary is a highly significant character in The Holdovers, who undergoes and overcomes grief by traveling down its long but necessary path.

The actress further suggested that each one of us has a little bit of Mary in them and finished a slightly flustered but touching victory speech. Her film, The Holdovers is a Christmas comedy drama that follows an ill-tempered teacher who must chaperone a bunch of students who have nowhere to be for Christmas break.

The Holdovers has scored three nominations at the Golden Globes this year, and already scored one of them. It is yet to be seen how many more accolades they will bring home this year.

The film is available on Peacock for streaming, but Indian viewers need to wait awhile longer to see it. The Golden Globes 2024 can be streamed on Lionsgate Play and OTTplay premium January 8, 2024, onwards.
