Mohan Raja's Godfather evoked curiousity ever since the project was announced as it is the official remake of Mollywood blockbuster Lucifer. The comparison between both films began on social media by movie buffs after the trailer of the Chiranjeevi-starrer was released.
The much-awaited movie hit the screens on October 5 as a Dussehra release. Surprisingly, the film did not have a huge release in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This is despite Nagarjuna's The Ghost, which released on the same day, not having a wide release either. Hence, Godfather, which opened to encouraging word of mouth, couldn't put up impressive numbers on day one.
Fans of Chiranjeevi and other movie buffs were surprised with the movie skipping release in Tamil Nadu. Despite many saying that it is because of the Ponniyin Selvan effect, there were reports that the Telugu political thriller will arrive in theatres a week later with a Tamil dubbed version as well.
The film is now ready to release in movie halls across Tamil Nadu; it has managed to obtain a decent number of screens in Chennai in spite of many movies from other languages already having bagged reasonable screens in the city. However, Godfather's Tamil version has skipped release owing to reasons best known to the team.
The project, bankrolled by RB Choudary and NV Prasad, entered the 100 crore club a couple of days ago, but its overall collection from across the globe is nowhere near what the makers had expected. A few attributed it to the fact that many film lovers would have already watched the original Mohanlal-starrer.
Then there are those who feel that Acharya's debacle has had a huge effect on Chiranjeevi's stardom. However, fans of the star opine that it's just a matter of time before their matinee idol comes up with a huge hit with his next project, Mega 154.
