Iconic filmmaker Ridley Scott is all set to bring his gladiators to the arena yet again. The filmmaker has announced that the script to his upcoming film, Gladiator 2 ‘has already been written’.
In conversation with Deadline, the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker revealed that his team had finished writing the script. He also mentioned that they had a well grounded idea of the premise to follow.
Stressing the fact that doing a film along the lines of Gladiator is not an easy task, Scott said the first film had enough elements that can be incorporated into the sequel as well.
The original Gladiator film, starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, tells the story of a gladiator who is betrayed by the son of the emperor he served and held captive. He escapes his captor, only to find his family murdered and home destroyed. He takes it upon himself to avenge his family’s death.
The upcoming sequel, which was greenlit in 2018, will follow the story of Lucious, the slain emperor’s nephew who succeeds to the Roman throne. The film will take place after a time jump of two to three decades. Crowe, who played the lead in the first film, is also expected to reprise his role in the sequel.
In addition to Gladiator 2, Scott is also working on a film about French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte, called Kitbag. The film will also feature Phoenix in the lead.
Meanwhile Scott’s crime drama House of Gucci, starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, will premiere on November 24 in the US.
