Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay's landmark film Ghilli is all set to re-release in April. The producers confirmed on Wednesday that the film will return to cinemas after two decades, on April 20.
The re-release of Ghilli also coincides with the film's 20th anniversary. The film first opened in cinemas on April 16, 2004, and became an instant sensation.
Earlier, producer AM Rathnam revealed that he had plans to digitally spruce up the blockbuster movie and bring it back to cinemas worldwide. However, the plan encountered multiple snags for various reasons. At the time of the film's initial release 20 years ago, Vijay was not as big a star as he is today.
Vijay held a strong position among his contemporaries, while superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan remained at the top of the star hierarchy in Tamil cinema. But, with Ghilli, everything changed as it redefined Vijay's stardom and expanded his fan base by leaps and bounds.
Now, the producers aim to tap into Vijay's huge following, which has grown extraordinarily in the last 20 years, by screening Ghilli.
The month of April is always preferred by Tamil filmmakers to release big blockbusters. However, all the major releases have been postponed this summer due to the impending Lok Sabha elections.
The box office business in Tamil Nadu is also going through a dry spell, adding to the woes of an already embattled ecosystem. For the first time, theatres in Tamil Nadu received a lease of life with the release of the Malayalam movie Manjummel Boys.
With no big releases in sight until the beginning of June, producers and theatre owners seem to be pinning their hopes on old Tamil blockbusters to end the box office dry spell.
Ghilli is also streaming in SunNXT and OTTplay Premium .
In addition to Ghilli, Karthi's Paiyaa is also set to re-release next week.
