Gangubai Kathiawadi: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film with Alia Bhatt gets new release date; trailer on February 4

Gangubai Kathiawadi, which is touted to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, has gotten a new release date. The film will now hit theatres on February 25, 2022. The trailer of the same will be released on February 4.

The exciting news was unveiled by the film’s lead star, Alia Bhatt, on her official social media handles recently. The post featured a new poster of Bhatt as the titular protagonist, where we can see the actress draped in a white sari with her hair down.

The upcoming film is based on a chapter from the 2011 book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, written by Hussain Zaidi. The film follows the story of Gangubai Kothewali, a sex worker who was forced into the profession by her suitor, Ramnik Lal. Gangubai soon rose to the ranks in the criminal world in the 1960s, becoming a madam at a Mumbai brothel and becoming an influential figure in the crime world.

The upcoming film is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, prior to its theatrical release. In theatres, the film can be watched in both Hindi and Telugu. The film’s release had been delayed numerous times before due to snags caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to Bhatt, the upcoming film also features Ajay Devgn, Huma Qureshi and Emraan Hashmi in special roles. Devgn’s first look from the film was also unveiled recently. Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, and Seema Pahwa also star in the film.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has directed the film and also served as its producer along with Jayantilal Gada. Gangubai Kathiawadi is produced under the banners of Bhansali Productions and Pen India Limited.
