Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, an unexpected hit at the box office, made its debut 23 years ago. Anil Sharma directed one of the biggest blockbusters in Bollywood, featuring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead roles. Now that the film has completed 23 years since its release, it's time to revisit the romantic action drama, which is currently streaming on ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium). Gadar was based on a story by Shaktimaan Talwar, while the film is reportedly based on Boota Singh. The film took place during the 1947 partition of India, and Amrish Puri, Lillete Dubey, Utkarsh Sharma, and Vivek Shauq round out the supporting cast.

Gadar storyline and setting

In this story, the partition of India is the central conflict. After falling for a Muslim girl, Tara Singh rescues her from her fellow Sikhs and marries her. They are content together until Sakina's father shows up and plots to break them up. While Tara fights for a chance to be with the one he loves, Sakina relocates to Pakistan.

Released worldwide on June 15, 2001, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha ran counter to Ashutosh Gowariker's sports drama Lagaan and was budgeted at around ₹190 million. The film became the highest-grossing Hindi film since Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), despite critics' mixed reviews; it earned over ₹768.8 million net in India and ₹1.33 billion globally, with a distributor share of ₹546 million.

Popularity and legacy

With over 50 million admissions, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is the second most popular Hindi film in India since the 1990s. According to 2017 ticket sales, Box Office India's adjusted gross in India is ₹4.86 billion.

On August 11, 2023, Deol, Patel, and Sharma reprised their roles in the sequel, Gadar 2. As part of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, Tara Singh travels back to Pakistan to free his son Charanjeet "Jeete" Singh from captivity.
