Back in 2018, the FX television channel announced the Shōgun series. After several delays, the horrifying pandemic, production issues, the English-Japanese drama series is finally coming after seven long years, in 2024. Does the name Shōgun ring a bell? If not, let's remind you about the 1980’s adventure-drama mini-series with the same name, which was directed by Jerry London, and stars Richard Chamberlain, Toshirô Mifune, Yoko Shimada, Frankie Sakai, John Rhys-Davies, Alan Badel, and Damien Thomas.

Shogun Story

Lost at sea, an Englishman named John Blackthorne (Richard Chamberlain) finds himself shipwrecked on the shores of a Japan consumed by internal dispute. Thrown into the heart of a warlord's (Toshirô Mifune) ruthless power struggle, he must learn the ways of the Samurai and navigate a web of intrigue that could see him rise to the pinnacle of power or fall victim to treachery. Shogun is a story of cultural collision, where East meets West in a breathtaking clash of ambition, betrayal, and the will to survive.

Shogun based on James Clavell's novel

Although it's fictional, the story of Shōgun is based on James Clavell's Asian Saga novel series. With Europeans as their lens, these novels delve into the cultural crossroads of East and West, tracing the transformative ripples that emanate from the meeting of these distinct civilizations. Clavell's Asian Saga includes seven novels – King Rat (1961), Tai-Pan (1966), Shogun (1975), Noble House (1981), Whirlwind (1986), Gai-Jin (1993), and Escape (1995).

Shōgun's captivating storyline was not its only winning element. Critics and audiences lauded its nuanced and faithful depiction of Japanese culture in the 1600s. The novel served as a time machine, transporting viewers to a world of samurai, geisha, and intricate rituals, earning praise for its historical authenticity.

Now after more than four decades of the mini-series, FX is bringing you the captivating story vastly with a ten-episode series. The interesting part is, this series will be having 21st century technology, which will make the combat breathtaking. The official trailer was released a month ago, and it's already getting compared with the famous Game of Thrones (GOT) series.
