Love is in the air! It’s Valentine’s Week after all. And, what defines love better than our own Bollywood. Agree? Well, Hindi movies and romance are synonymous – one cannot do without the other. After all, the shy, understated romance of the 1950s and 60s evolved into a rebellious love in the 1970s and 80s, which was followed by the dreamy romantic sequences of the 1990s and finally the all-encompassing inclusive love of the 2000s era. Here’s looking at some of the timeless, must-watch romantic movies of all time available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
Deewana (1992)
Directed by Raj Kanwar, Deewana featured 1970s Bollywood’s OG chocolate boy Rishi Kapoor and equally stellar cast such as Amrish Puri, Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti. A classic love triangle between the three leads, the film also marked Shah Rukh Khan’s celluloid debut. Rishi Kapoor’s character Ravi, a professional singer, falls in love with Divya Bharti’s character Kajal Bedi, and marries her. Things take an unexpected turn sooner when Ravi’s uncle – the antagonist – kills him for money and Divya meets SRK’s character Raja later. The central idea of the plot is how the complex web of relationships gets resolved.
Nearly all of the songs from this film went on to become major blockbusters and are still loved by music enthusiasts, whether it be "Sochenge Tumhein Pyar," sung by Kumar Sanu and picturised on Kapoor, or Khan bouncing and dancing on his bike as Vinod Rathod crooned "Koi Na Koi Chaahiye". After receiving positive reviews from critics, Deewana became a huge financial success and the second-highest grossing movie of the year, making approximately ₹162 million worldwide.
Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001)
A romantic drama directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein is a remake of the Tamil hit film Minnale released the same year. RHTDM was also the Bollywood debut film for both Madhavan and Dia Mirza. The romantic tale of Madhav "Maddy" Shastri (Madhavan) and Reena Malhotra (Dia) is the focal point of the movie. The latter is engaged to Rajeev "Sam" Samra (Saif Ali Khan), a young American settled in the US and a former competitor of Maddy's in college. Whether it was the result of brilliant direction, captivating music, excellent acting, or perfect casting, the film won over audiences' hearts. Even today's millennials and Gen Z are enthralled by its poignant tale and beautiful music, more than 20 years later. Watch this for a soul-stirring romantic experience like never before.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)
Helmed by Sooraj R Barjatya, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo starring Salman Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Neil Nitin Mukesh in significant roles, was a romantic royal family drama. Known for delivering some top of the list box office successes in the 1980s and 1990s, Sooraj R Barjatya flipped the script to keep pace with audiences’ tastes in 2015. A classic Rajshri film, PRDP tells the story of a stern prince played by Salman in a double role who tries to recover from an alleged assassination attempt days before his coronation. And as is typical of our beloved Hindi cinema, he gets replaced by a romantic lookalike! Watch it if you want a truckload of cheesy romance that is riding on idealism and moral values with ample sprinkling of a feel-good storyline.
Dil Bechara (2020)
A coming-of-age tragedy romance movie featuring Sushant Singh Rajput for one last time and Sanjana Sanghi as female lead, this Mukesh Chhabra directorial narrated the touching tale of two young people who are madly in love - Kizie, a young girl battling illness, meets Manny at a support group. Produced by Fox Star Studios, the film is based on John Green's 2012 novel The Fault in Our Stars and its 2014 American film adaptation. The main plot of Dil Bechara is the bond between two star-crossed lovers that is full of romance, laughter and a commentary on the unpredictable nature of life itself.

Shiddat: Journey Beyond Love (2021)
An intense love story bringing together Sunny Kaushal, Radhika Madan, Diana Penty and Mohit Raina in two parallel leads, Shiddat: Journey Beyond Love showcases the differences between a typical, mature husband and a carefree, overly enthusiastic guy pursuing his true love alongside. In Shiddat, a young guy moves heaven and earth for a girl who has left him heartbroken and clueless, poignant metaphors about life and love abound. Sachin-Jigar, Manan Bhardwaj, and Gourov Dasgupta composed the film's soundtrack, while Kausar Munir, Priya Saraiya, Kunwar Juneja, and Manan Bhardwaj wrote the lyrics.
