Vettah

First on the list is Kunchacko Boban and Manju Warrier’s intriguing psychological thriller Vettah. Believed to be Malayalam cinema’s first movie based on mind-game, the film revolves around two officers who are caught in the web of deception and lies after they take up a complicated case. What makes Vettah special is the film’s engaging screenplay and the characterization of the lead actors. If you are in the mood to solve a complex puzzle, then Vettah should be your go-to film.

Anjaam Pathiraa

The brilliantly executed screenplay of Midhun Manuel Thomas’ blockbuster film Anjaam Pathiraa makes it easily one of the best crime thrillers delivered by the Malayalam industry. Starring Kunchacko Boban, Sharaf U Dheen and Sreenath Bhasi, the Midhun Manuel Thomas directorial centred around a ruthless serial killer. Although the film might be considered a slash psychological thriller, the performances and gripping screenplay make this film a must-watch if you are an ardent fan of crime dramas.

Ivide

This crime thriller, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nivin Pauly and Bhavana, was criticised for its slow pace, but the film was well-received for its cinematography and editing. Prithviraj’s character, a police detective in Atlanta, is in search of a serial killer who targets Indians working at outsourced Indian companies. Overall, the film’s technical aspects and decent performances make it a worthy crime drama on this list.

Aksharam

Aksharam

Directed by Sibi Malayil, this 1995 crime thriller revolves around actor Suresh Gopi’s character, a popular journalist, known for his daring news reports. However, he struggles when he tries to unfold the mystery behind the death of a popular dancer. This film’s performances and engaging narrative make for a compelling watch. Interestingly, late actor Kalabhavan Mani made his first screen appearance in a cameo role of an auto rickshaw driver in the film.

Janakan

This multi-starrer crime thriller with Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Biju Menon in the lead, revolves around a father who seeks to avenge the murder of his daughter. Although the film doesn't bring any twists or contain any complex plotlines, the movie does justice in narrating a compelling yet emotional storyline. Credited as Suresh Gopi’s 200th film, the actor’s rustic performance was appreciated by cinephiles.
