Nikkhil Advani's series Freedom at Midnight opened to positive feedback upon its OTT release. The show premiered on SonyLIV and OTTplay Premium on November 15. Set around India's independence and partition, the series stars Chirag Vohra as Mahatma Gandhi. After the show was released on streaming, Chirag revealed he had to lose 15 kg for his role in Freedom at Midnight. The actor recalled how he lost weight in approximately six months.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Chirag revealed director Nikkhil Advani had only one demand from him for Freedom at Midnight. The actor had to lose weight. "When I met Nikkhil sir, he said, ‘Whether I cast you in the character of Gandhi or not is secondary. The first thing that you need to do is lose 15 kg'," revealed Chirag.
Reacting to it, the actor told Nikkhil that if he casts him in the show, he will do whatever the director wants him to do. At that time, he weighed around 72 kg. And approximately within six months with the help of a dietician-approved meal plan, Vohra shed 15 kg.
Chirag was given creative liberty regarding bringing alive Mahatma Gandhi's role on the screen. Nikkhil had a lot of faith in the actor and let Chirag do his homework for the role.
"Nikkhil sir worked on the show for four years with his writing team. Before going to the shoot, we actors also prepared a lot. But once we reached the set, sir said, ‘Let’s forget all the preparation. Let’s feel the moment and let the magic happen.’ From that, an artiste’s [instinct] emerges and it always goes in the right direction," added Chirag.
In Freedom at Midnight, Chirag is joined by Rajendra Chawla and Sidhant Gupta who play Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru on screen. The star cast also includes Arif Zakaria, Ira Dubey, Rajesh Kumar, Malishka Mendonsa and others.
