Film enthusiasts are surprised when they see Vishak Nair, who is best recognised for playing Kuppi in the new-age romantic comedy Anandam, is now branching out into distinct roles that showcase his versatility as an actor. In the latest Malayalam film, Footage, which debuted in theatres on August 23, he plays the lead role. The young star discussed his directorial plans and the reason for his deliberate film selections in order to avoid being stereotyped in an interview with OTTplay.

What would you say about your experience in Footage?

In many respects, the movie holds a special place in my heart, especially since it is my first time taking on the major role. I have been in this industry for a long time, and it took me some time to find this kind of chance. I have to admit, though, that Saiju had guts to put me in the main role. The film is also innovative in a number of ways, most notably in its technical aspects and narrative approach. I count it a privilege that I was able to play a significant role in this kind of project.

Mostly supporting roles were offered to you after playing Kuppi in Anandam. Have you ever been anxious about falling into a certain character stereotype?

Naturally, I felt strongly that I was just being typecast, but since our industry lacks an audition culture, it is not anyone's fault. As a result, it is challenging for an actor to demonstrate to directors how adaptable we are as performers. Our previous roles are taken into consideration when the directors cast us now. In order to be creatively satisfied by 2018–19, I decided to work on fewer films and only choose diversified ones, even if they were small ventures. I had the opportunity to work in Bollywood thanks to online auditions that began during COVID-19.

Were you upset that your most recent movie, Exit, did not get the praise it deserved?

Because the story and genre had a novelty value that piqued my interest right away, I never felt doubtful about the project. Furthermore, the opportunity to take on such a role comes only once in a lifetime. Undoubtedly, I was upset that the movie did not receive the acclaim it deserved, but since the makers are releasing it in Tamil Nadu in September, I am optimistic that will change. Tamil will see a broad release of Exit, which will help in reaching more audience.

The film is well-made and gave Malayalis a fresh cinematic experience. Despite appearing on very few screens in Kerala following its theatrical premiere here, I have primarily heard positive remarks about it. It has enormous potential and will get more recognition after making its OTT debut.

Your enthusiasm for filmmaking led you to pursue a career in the industry. Are you going to direct a film any time soon?

In 2018, I started opting fewer films, and myself and Anandam's director Ganesh opened a production house in Kochi. We were always writing, directing, and creating commercials and music videos for major brands like Bacardi and Mahindra. I was able to brush up on my practical experience. We brainstormed several ideas during the lockdown, and I wrote a few of screenplays. I am currently actively looking for a producer for one of them. I am hoping that shortly the producers and cast will be confirmed.

Could you describe the type of movie it would be?

It is a commercially appealing topic with a female centric subject. That being said, it is not overly preachy and features a cast of actresses from various industries. Four women serve as the movie's main characters, and it maintains an action-packed, suspenseful narrative with plenty of comedy. I believe it would be well received by audiences.

What are your upcoming works?

I am playing a pivotal role in Tovino Thomas' Identity, which will hit the big screen soon this year. Other line-ups include the Hindi film Emergency and the Kunchacko Boban-starrer Officer, in which I appear in a negative role. I am also acting in a Netflix series, Akka, starring Keerthy Suresh.
