Fresh off the success of Kaatera, which is still in theatres, Challenging Star Darshan has begun work on his next. Called Devil - The Hero, this is a film with director Milana Prakash, who had directed the Kannada superstar in Tarak. The film has Kaatera cinematographer Sudhakar S Raj on board and when quizzed about Devil, he said that the team was in the process of putting together a first glimpse, which will give audiences an idea about the subject and Darshan’s character and that they are looking at revealing it on the Challenging Star’s birthday on February 16.
Launched officially in early November, Devil – The Hero is said to be a stylish commercial entertainer, tailor-made for hardcore Darshan fans. Comparing Kaatera and Devil, Sudhakar said that the latter is a completely different film in terms of genre and treatment and requires him also to snap out of Kaatera mode. The Tharun Sudhir directorial is a period film set in the 70s that tackles the land reform law and has been widely hailed as the comeback of Darshan the performer. The actor had a content-backed role in the film, which has been declared an industry hit.
In an interview with Cinema Express, Milana Prakash, who now goes as Prakash Veer, had said that unlike Tarak, which was a stylish love story, featuring Shanvi Srivastava and Shruti Hariharan with the Challenging Star, Devil – The Hero will be about portraying Darshan for the mass action hero that he is. The film, he had said, will be an action-packed thriller.
Meanwhile, Kaatera is set to end its theatrical run shortly and will make its way to OTT. Zee Network holds the satellite and digital rights and it has been reported that Kaatera will drop on Zee5 Kannada on February 9 . There are also reports that following the success of the film, the team of Kaatera has been contemplating dubbing and releasing it in Telugu and Tamil too. When asked, Tharun confirmed this, but said that a release date could be announced only after these versions are censored.
After Devil – The Hero, Darshan is set to collaborate with director Prem, who is currently in the midst of his film with Dhruva Sarja, which is, interestingly, called KD – The Devil. Prem’s film is being bankrolled by KVN Productions, which will also step in for his next with Darshan. In the immediate aftermath of Kranti, which came out in early 2023, it had been rumoured that Darshan was looking at reuniting with the team soon enough on another project.
Considering how badly Kranti fared at the box office, fans had been urging the actor not to repeat the same team and it appears that he has paid heed. At the time, it was also rumoured that he would do two films with Tharun Sudhir, including one about freedom fighter Sindhura Lakshmana. Darshan is expected to revisit this at some point, as the actor is known to favour historical films.
