As the investigation widens, realisation dawns on the detective that the murder and the web of lies surrounding it are far more complex than he envisioned. Malayalam legends Mohanlal and Mammootty play the lead roles as the detective and the murdered filmmaker in Padmarajan’s Kariyilakkattu Pole.

Yavanika (1982) - (Eros Now, Free on MX Player)

The 1982 Malayalm thriller is a lesser-known gem and it is a riveting investigative drama. It tells the story of a Tabla player who mysteriously goes missing . An investigation into his disappearance reveals a tragic and complicated tale of lies, deceit, and abuse. Helmed by K G George, the film features a star-studded ensemble of Bharat Gopy, Mammootty, Nedumudi Venu, Jagathy Sreekumar, Venu Nagavalli, Jalaja, and Thilakan.

Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006) - Zee5

Gautham Vasudev Menon’s 2006 neo-noir thriller Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu is arguably the most revered film on this list. Starring Kamal Haasan in the lead, the plot revolves around his character Raghavan whose investigation into a series of brutal murders sends him across the globe. Veteran Tamil actors Jyotika and Prakash Raj essay other prominent roles in the film.

Ebar Shabor (2015)- Prime Video , Hoichoi

The Bengali investigative thriller follows the murder mystery of a woman killed at her own party. Veteran police detective Shabor Dasgupta is tasked with solving the case as he faces several unforeseen obstacles during his investigation. Saswata Chatterjee essays the lead role in this underrated film helmed by Arindam Sil.

The 2008 Noida double murder case of a 13-year-old and her family’s live-in domestic worker gripped the nation when the news broke nearly 15 years ago. Irrfan Khan essays the lead role in the film adaptation, titled Talvar, which was released in 2015. This taut thriller is helmed by Meghna Gulzar based on a script by Vishal Bhardwaj. Konkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi essay other prominent roles.

Raat Akeli Hai (2020) - Netflix

Bollywood star Nawazuddin Siddiqui essays the role of a small-town policeman who is thrust into a high-profile murder investigation of an aristocrat. However, the victim’s evasive family and his own inner turmoil threaten to derail the investigation. Directed by Honey Trehan, the film features Radhika Apte and Shweta Tripathi in important roles.

Anukokunda Oka Roju (2005) - Prime Video

The 2005 Telugu neo-noir mystery film, Anukokunda Oka Roju, narrates the story of a woman named Sahasra who realises that she has no recollection of the previous day. She is soon chased by unknown assailants as she struggles to piece together the mystery of her ‘missing day’. Charmy and Jagapati Babu essay the lead roles in this Chandra Sekhar Yeleti directorial.
