Films and TV shows about detectives and police procedurals remain popular among many across the globe. And when the story is told through the lens of a female detective it offers the viewers a unique perspective on the dangers and challenges they must overcome in order to get to the bottom of the affair and close cases. For today’s List hai to hit hai we have curated a list of films and TV shows led by some of the most compelling female detectives on screen.

Enola Holmes - Netflix

Based on Nancy Springer’s series of novels, the 2020 mystery drama film Enola Holmes stars Millie Bobby Brown as the titular teenage detective. The Stranger Things star slips into the role of the younger sibling of the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes with much ease and seems to be rather effective as a teenage sleuth. The film follows Enola as she investigates the disappearance of her mother and stumbles upon a dangerous conspiracy. Enola's intelligence and instincts match her famous brothers Sherlock and Mycroft, and at times, she even outwits both. She also breaks the fourth wall often to interact with the audience allowing us a more immersive and inclusive vantage point to take in the proceedings. Directed by Harry Bradbeer, the Netflix original film also stars Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Veronica Mars - Prime Video

Veronica Mars is an underrated TV classic from the 2000s starring Kristen Bell as the titular character. The plot revolves around high-school student Veronica whose world is turned upside down when her best friend is murdered and her father loses his position as the town’s sheriff. A determined Veronica decides to help her father start a detective agency as she carves a reputation of her own as one of the finest private investigators in her town despite her age. The CW series is created by Rob Thomas, and it ran for four seasons.

Marcella - Netflix

The British Nordic series Marcella is helmed by Swedish filmmaker Hans Rosenfeldt. The series stars Anna Friel in the lead as a lone detective working on a case about a serial killer. Despite being set in London, the series is a throwback Nordic noir thriller. It also examines the psyche of its lead characters with its nuanced subtext against the backdrop of a gripping mystery. The BBC production ran for three seasons between 2016-2021.

Agatha Christie's Marple - Sony LIV

Based on one of Agatha Christie’s most iconic characters, Marple, the series revolves around an elderly woman named Jane Marple. Miss Marple, a super sleuth, who helps solve murder mysteries. The 2004 British TV series is among the several adaptations of the iconic character but is widely regarded as the definitive version of the character. Geraldine McEwan essayed the role of the titular character for the first three seasons until her retirement. She was replaced by Julia McKenzie between the fourth and the sixth season.

Jessica Jones - Disney+ Hotstar

Private investigator Jessica Jones is no ordinary detective. Unlike her peers, she has the added advantage of also being blessed with superhuman abilities. But unlike her superhero peers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she has no intentions of actually wearing a costume and saving the day, as she believes her powers are a curse. Instead, she prefers to live in isolation and work as an investigator. However, with the return of an old adversary named Kilgrave, a psychopath with the ability to control minds, her sleuthing skills are challenged and she’s forced to become a reluctant superhero. Krysten Ritter plays the lead as Jessica Jones, while British actor David Tenant essays the role of Kilgrave, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, on-screen Marvel villains of all time. Carrie-Anne Moss, Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville, and Erin Moriarty among others essay other supporting roles.

Happy Valley - BookMyShow Stream

The BBC TV series Happy Valley is arguably one of the best British crime dramas of the past decade. It is set in a town in West Yorkshire, Northern England. Sarah Lancashire effortlessly slips into the role of Police Sergeant Catherine Cawood, as she straddles her complicated personal life along with her life-threatening professional life. To make things more challenging, she must also look out for her grandson and her sister who happens to be a recovering alcoholic. But when the man responsible for her daughter’s death is released and it coincides with the kidnapping of a young woman, Catherine begins to investigate. Created by Sally Wainwright, the series also stars Siobhan Finneran, James Norton, and Charlie Murphy in pivotal roles.

Delhi Crime - Netflix

Created by Richie Mehta, Delhi Crime is a Netflix original police procedural series. The first season is based on the Nirbhaya case that shook the nation. Shefali Shah stars in season one as the lead investigator DCP Vartika Chaturvedi who is tasked with finding the culprits responsible for the heinous crime. The second season follows Vartika taking charge of investigating the brutal crimes committed by the Kachcha Baniyan gang who happen to target senior citizens living in a gated community. Their MO was to sneak into the homes of unsuspecting elders, particularly when they were alone, and bludgeon them to death before robbing them. Both seasons received universal acclaim and features an ensemble cast of Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang, and Adil Hussain.
