Sethupathi plays a middle-aged man who kidnaps a politician’s son to extort money, but unbeknownst to him, the son himself had been plotting a fake kidnapping to trick his father into paying a ransom. The film also stars Bobby Simha, Ashok Selvan, Ramesh Thilak, Karunakaran and Sanchita Shetty in prominent roles.

Aandavan Kattalai ( Sun NXT )

The 2016 Tamil satire follows two friends Gandhi and Pandi who travel to the city of Madurai to scam their way to London. They hope that by migrating to London will help erase their debts, but as one would expect things do not go according to plan and their web of lies and deceit pushes them to the brink of disaster. Helmed by M. Manikandan, the screenplay is penned by Arul Chezhiyan and Anucharan.

Super Deluxe ( Netflix )

Sethupathi won several accolades for his performance as a transgender woman named Shilpa in the anthology film Super Deluxe. The film tells the stories of an angsty teenager, an unfaithful wife, and a transgender woman, who are predestined to face their demons on one fateful day. The film also stars Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Ramya Krishnan.

Dharma Durai ( Disney+ Hotstar, Sun NXT )

Vijay Sethupathi stars opposite Tamannaah and Aishwarya Rajesh in this slice-of-life drama. The film follows a village doctor named Dharmadurai who turns to alcohol after a heartbreak. Nevertheless, a person from his past shows up and his life changes for good. Helmed by Seenu Ramasamy, the film won an award at the 64th National Film Awards.

The 2017 film is probably one of Vijay Sethupathi’s most well-known films. He plays a dreaded gangster named Vedha and R. Madhavan plays the pragmatic policeman who is trying to hunt him down. In 2022, the film was remade in Hindi and stars Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan in the title roles.

Naanum Rowdy Dhaan ( Sun NXT, aha )

The action comedy stars Vijay Sethupathi as the son of a police inspector who strays away from his mother’s values and commits illegal activities. He starts a feud with a ruthless gangster and while on his quest to get retribution, he inadvertently falls in love with a deaf woman.
