Kantara and KGF: Chapter 2 producers Hombale Films’ Malayalam foray with Dhoomam didn’t quite go as planned . Despite having Kannada filmmaker Pawan Kumar and stellar actors such Fahadh Faasil, Aparna Balamurali and Roshan Mathew on board, the movie fell flat at the box office. And contrary to most big Malayalam films that drop on streaming platforms within a month of its release, Dhoomam’s OTT release too has been delayed.

It was widely speculated that the movie’s OTT rights were purchased by Amazon Prime Video, which has so far released all movies produced by the makers, and that the streamer could drop the film, in Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu, a month after its theatrical release in July.

Dhoomam’s OTT rights still not sold?

However, there’s still no news on Dhoomam’s OTT release date. When OTTplay got in touch with a well-placed member of the film’s team, the source told us, “There are certain internal issues.” That said, the source didn’t clarify whether it was with the producers or the streaming platform.

The makers are yet to officially confirm that they had sold the OTT rights of the movie, which was also one of the rare box office failures for Hombale Films. Dhoomam, which also has Vineeth and Achyuth Kumar, is a thriller that revolved around the big tobacco industry and the film’s director Pawan had been trying to get it made since 2008 .

It wasn’t until Hombale had come onboard that the plans had materialised, with Fahadh agreeing to be part of it if it was made as a Malayalam film.

Hombale Films suffers a setback with Salaar

Meanwhile, Hombale Films faced another setback recently, with its hugely-anticipated project Salaar, which was scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on September 28, was pushed to a later date , reportedly due to the post-production work getting delayed.

Salaar, which is helmed by KGF filmmaker Prashanth Neel, has Prabhas, Shruti Haasan and Prithviraj Sukumaran in leading roles. Incidentally, Hombale is also set to co-produce Prithviraj’s upcoming directorial L2: Empuraan , the second instalment of Mohanlal’s Lucifer franchise. The production firm has also roped in Prithviraj and Empuraan’s scriptwriter for another Malayalam movie – Tyson, which is expected to go on floors in 2024.
