The Pulimurugan filmmaker teamed up with the two young actors for the first time for the upcoming film, which is set to release on March 11

Over the years, director Vysakh has worked with some of the best in the industry – Mohanlal, Mammootty and Prithviraj Sukumaran – in big films such as Pulimurugan and Pokkiri Raja. His latest film Night Drive had him collaborating with two of the industry’s finest young talents – Anna Ben and Roshan Mathew, and the filmmaker says this offered him new insights into how actors in today’s generation work.
On his experience working with the Kappela duo in Night Drive, Vysakh tells OTTplay, “I would like to call it schooling. I could learn a lot of new things that I wasn’t used to from the two youngsters. Their method of performance and how they approached the script were all interesting for me.”
Elaborating on how they approached the film, which is set to release on March 11, he says, “From what I understood, the actors from this generation follow the script keenly, from the time they are first narrated the story till the shoot is over. They analyse what the content is, where the character stands in the script, how the character behaves in each situation, the impact of each shot on the entirety of the story and how they can perform within that margin of error. They are careful about these details and well aware of it.”
Vysakh also explains that this method also makes the job easier for the filmmakers. “Usually, a director-oriented approach or a collaborative one between the director and actors would dominate filmmaking, but with them, it’s more script-oriented. For a director, the benefit is that you don’t have to worry about the characters as they have all it figured out,” says the Pulimurugan filmmaker.
The director is also all praise for their performances in the film. “It was a delight to just watch them perform. You won’t know whether they are acting or just being, that’s how natural they are. There are times when I thought we should have used sync sound because they were that good,” he says.
