Nivin Pauly’s Thuramukham was one of the most-awaited films in 2022. The year started with the makers announcing a January release but it was pushed. Last month, for the fourth time since the pandemic, the producers once again delayed it after announcing a release date.
The movie, which is a period drama revolving around the chappa system that was practised in the 1900s in the ports of Cochin and the revolts of the labourers against it, is a big budget venture featuring some of the best talents in the Malayalam film industry – Nivin Pauly, Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan, Indrajith Sukumaran, Arjun Ashokan, Darshana Rajendran and Poornima Indrajith.
In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, Nivin told us about the reason the movie, which had completed its shoot before the pandemic and was initially set for an April 2020 release, has been delayed so far.
“It’s facing some financial troubles; the producers have to settle their dues to actors, technicians and financiers. The discussions have been going on for a long time now, we don’t have a timeline for the release as of now,” said the actor.
Nivin, however, admits that a lot of people are eagerly waiting for the film’s release. “Every time I share a poster of a new film, people comment, asking for an update on Thuramukham. So, the film is highly-anticipated,” says the actor.
While Thuramukham is yet to have a release date this year, Nivin’s next release will be Padavettu, which is set to hit theatres in September during Onam. The film, which also has Aditi Balan, is about the fight of the oppressed to reclaim what is truly theirs. The actor has also completed shooting for Rosshan Andrrews’ big budget entertainer that is tentatively titled Saturday Nights. The film also has Siju Wilson, Aju Varghese, Saniya Iyyappan and Grace Antony as part of its cast.
