Navya Nair’s Oruthee, which hit theatres in March, not only marked her comeback in Malayalam cinema but also went on the rake in generally positive reviews. Soon, after the film’s success, the makers had announced that it will be getting a sequel and now OTTplay has learnt what the upcoming film, also directed by VK Prakash film, will be about.
Oruthee, which is based on a true incident, revolved around Navya’s character running from post to post to secure money for the treatment of her daughter, who is hospitalised due to food poisoning. After she decides to pawn her gold necklace, she is informed that she was cheated by the jewellery and fights against them to get back what is rightfully hers. The film ends with her deciding to take the case to the court.
On the sequel that is tentatively titled Oruthee, the film’s scriptwriter S Suresh Babu tells us that it is currently planned as a courtroom drama. “The film will revolve around an ordinary woman, Radhamani, taking on a huge corporate company in the court. Based on real-life cases, we do know what will transpire in such legal proceedings and we want to incorporate of all that authentically for this film. The movie will reflect all that along with the trials and tribulations of Radhamani.”
He also explains that the film is currently scheduled to go on floors by the end of this year. “The film’s script requires a lot of research and we are currently collecting materials as part of the scripting process,” he says.
Oruthee 2 will also have Saiju Kurup and Vinayakan, who played Radhamani’s husband and a police officer who helps Radhamani, respectively, reprising their roles. Meanwhile, VK Prakash and Suresh Babu are also set to work on a Hindi-Malayalam bilingual web series on E Sreedharan that will be produced by Sony LIV. Oruthee is available to stream on Manorama Max.
