While Mohanlal and Mammootty have shares screen space in over 50 films in their career, Malayalam fans have always wanted the veteran superstar duo to collaborate again. It’s been 14 years since Twenty: 20, their last outing together in major roles. The fans did get their hopes up last year when another project by the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) was announced.
Though film has been on the backburner since then, now the film’s co-director TK Rajeev Kumar, in an exclusive chat with OTTplay, reveals the project is still very much on. “We had planned the movie during the pandemic, but after the restrictions were eased, almost all the leading artistes got busy with projects they had already committed,” says the filmmaker, who is scripting the venture.
Rajeev Kumar, who will be co-directing the film with Priyadarshan, confirms the movie has not been shelved. “We are now waiting for the confirmation for all artistes. A lot of them had backlogs of films that they had to complete. Once those films are done, we will begin work on this; we will take a final decision on when it will go on floors after everyone’s schedule frees up,” says the director, who is also busy with the post-production of his film Bermuda starring Shane Nigam and Vinay Forrt.
The yet-to-titled movie, which will be a crime thriller, will have all 140+ members of AMMA as part of its cast. What got the fans most excited about the film was that it would once again bring Mohanlal and Mammootty together. “Yes, they will work together. It’s just that we haven’t locked the dates yet. Both of them will have equal space and prominence in the movie, which has been conceived while incorporating all the young stars in Malayalam too,” concludes the director.
